elected in county
Wayne Boblitt Press staff
At least 21 new leaders will take the reins of local governmental positions in Brown County this coming January after winning elections this past Tuesday, Nov. 3.
10 current officeholders appear to have lost their bids for election.
Many of the races were very close and possibly could change results.
Half of those losing officeholders who trailed following this past Tuesday's Unofficial General Election Results, however, trailed an apparent elected opponent by as few as one to 20 votes.
The Brown County Board of Elections still has to count provisional ballots and certify the ones that are acceptable. The certification will take place Tuesday, Nov. 17, and the results of some close races possibly may change.
The Brown County Elections Board reported 12,754 of 28,725 registered voters in the county, or 44.4 percent, went to the polls this past Tuesday. That undoubtedly was a respectable number in an "off election" year that didn't feature such major political races as Ohio governor, U.S. president, or federal or state legislative seats.
New Officeholders Listed
The Aberdeen and Higginsport village councils will see the biggest changes in 2010 as each will welcome three new members.
Jerry Applegate, Jay Castle and Jason Phillips won seats on the Aberdeen Village Council this past Tuesday while former Higginsport mayors James "Matt" Adams and Jim Ferguson as well as Eddie Crawford Jr. won seats on the Higginsport Village Council.
The Western Brown Local School District Board of Education will have two new members - Lynette Garrett and Michael Kirk - who won both available seats on that board in a three-candidate race on Nov. 3.
Sardinia was the only one of Brown County's 10 villages to have a mayor's race this year, and Sardinia Village Councilman Todd Bumbalough won that race to finish out the final two years of Terry Downs' term. Downs, who won the Sardinia mayor's seat in 2007, resigned from that office this past May 11.
Village councils, township boards of trustees and a school board who will welcome one new member each in January and each projected new member's name include:
Georgetown Village Council: Steve Triplett.
Hamersville Village Council: Ragan Ernst.
Mt. Orab Village Council: Daniel Reed.
Byrd Township Board of Trustees: Steve Evans.
Clark Township Board of Trustees: William Neal.
Franklin Township Board of Trustees: Nicholas Dailey.
Lewis Township Board of Trustees: Danny Wisby.
Pleasant Township Board of Trustees: Dennis Daulton.
Sterling Township Board of Trustees: Joseph Horton.
Union Township Board of Trustees: Mark Kinder.
Washington Township Board of Trustees: Matthew Latham.
Eastern Local School District Board of Education: former Eastern Board member Mike Hoskins.
59 Current Leaders Elected
Fifty-nine current members of village councils or boards of public affairs, township boards of trustees, and school boards were elected this past Tuesday as well. While many of those 59 leaders had been elected to a four-year term of service in 2005, some others were appointed since then to their positions.
Former Aberdeen Mayor Billie Eitel, who was appointed earlier this year as an Aberdeen Village Council member, won election this past Tuesday to a four-year term on that legislative body.
All four Fayetteville Village Council members - Tina Houk, Joseph Huber, Harriett Kleemeyer and Frank E. South - whose seats were up won their races and also were the only ones who filed to run for those seats .
While Triplett will take the Georgetown Village Council seat currently held by Ray Becraft, who chose not to seek re-election, the three Georgetown Village Council members - Daryll Gray, Christopher Renshaw and Drew Watson - whose seats were up all were elected this past Tuesday. Six candidates ran in that contest.
The three Hamersville Village Council members - Betty Kirkpatrick, Keith Staggs and Harry Tolliver Jr. - whose terms were up were elected on Nov. 3. They and newcomer Ernst were the only four candidates who ran to fill the four available council slots.
There also was an election for a Hamersville Board of Public Affairs trustee, and current officeholder Janet Talbott, the only candidate to file, won a four-year term on that board.
Three of the four Mt. Orab Village Council candidates - David Brenner, Joe Howser and Herm Scott - whose seats were up were elected this past Tuesday in a five-candidate race.
The four Ripley Village Council members - Scotty Eagan, Charles Poole, Roberta Sidwell and Karen Spires - whose terms were up were elected on Nov. 3 in a five-candidate race.
While four slots were open on the Russellville Village Council, only one candidate filed to run. Current Councilman Don Salisbury was elected to another four-year term.
While four slots were open on the Sardinia Village Council, only two candidates filed to run, and Arthur Hoovler Jr. and Tom Reifenberger, who currently serve on the council, each won a four-term year on Sardinia's legislative body.
While four slots were open on the St. Martin Village Council and one slot each was open for a Mt. Orab Board of Public Affairs trustee and for the St. Martin mayor's post, no one filed to run for any of those positions.
Many Trustees Re-Elected
While two positions were open on each of the 16 township boards of trustees in Brown County, only two candidates filed to run in five township board races.
Current officeholder Dennis Schneider and newcomer Neal were the only candidates running in Clark Township.
Current officeholders who were the only candidates in their township and thus were elected this past Tuesday included:
Aaron Moran and Gary Pickerill in Jefferson Township.
David Brinkman and Louis Johnson in Perry Township.
Jay Anderson and Roger Griffith in Pike Township.
Dale Anderson and David Smiley in Scott Township.
Trustees currently holding offices in their respective townships who were elected this past Tuesday in races that included three or more candidates included:
Shannon Wagoner, who won in a three-candidate race in Byrd Township.
Thomas Bradley and Chester Eyre, who won in a three-candidate race in Eagle Township.
Mike Kress, who along with newcomer Dailey won in a three-candidate race in Franklin Township.
Gary Frye and Jay Holden, who won in a three-candidate race in Green Township.
Kenneth Chamberlain and Randy Dugan, who won in a four-candidate race in Huntington Township.
Mark Dotson and James Rau, who won in a three-candidate race in Jackson Township.
Randy Waterfield, who along with newcomer Wisby won in a four-candidate race in Lewis Township.
Frank Helbling, who along with newcomer Daulton won in a four-candidate race in Pleasant Township.
Barbara Watson, who along with newcomer Horton won in an eight-candidate race in Sterling Township. While it could be considered a seven-candidate race as one candidate withdrew, the candidate who pulled out of the race still pulled in 45 votes.
Martin Plymesser, who along with newcomer Kinder won in a four-candidate race in Union Township.
Janie Wills, who along with newcomer Latham won in a three-candidate race in Washington Township.
One of the five school board races in Brown County had the exact number of candidates as there were available slots. In that race, current officeholders Richard Applegate, Robert Carpenter and Glenda Huff were elected to four-year terms on the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington Local School District Board of Education.
